Back to HomepageThe place I chose for investigation and observation is in front of the primark, a large supermarket in Winchester city center. I arrived at this place at 2 o 'clock on Saturday afternoon and observed the crowd flow in and out of the mall on that day. First I will introduce the location of this shopping mall. Primark is located opposite the bus station and is a large general supermarket. The reason why I chose this place is that it is located at the entrance of the city center and every weekend, some vendors will set up stalls in front of the store. I took a look at the buildings around the primark and I found that there were a lot of people on weekends compared to the workdays. I analyzed the buildings types around it, including some small vendors' stalls, bus station, a general supermarket and a coffee shop, and I was sitting in front of the coffee shop opposite the mall. Next, I made statistics and analyzed what factors would lead to changes in the passenger flow at the gate of the shopping mall. Among them, I concluded that weather and time changes are the two important components that affect the passenger flow. Here are some specific examples and pictures of weather affecting the change of passenger flow. You can see on the left is during the rainny times, there were less people than that in sunny times on the right. During my research times, I once heard a man say to his wife, "It's raining, let's go fast." Another important factor that affecting the passenger flow on the day is during the time between 2:00 and 5:00, before the day was getting dark, there were still many people, but from 5:30 to 6 or even 7 o 'clock, the passenger flow decreased sharply. Next, i will introduce some interesting actions between the people that I captured. During this period, i observed that the types of people were mainly divided into walking with pets, shopping with a family and other types. I observed that most of people who shopped with the pets chose to keep dogs as the pet, which account for about forty percent of the total number of passengers on that day, and i observed the types of thes dogs including Teddy dog, Rottweiler dog, Labrador Retriever dog and Beagle dog and other types of dog. I did some sketches for them, and i made some statistics that what percentages of the dog types among the people. The most popular type of dog was teddy, accounting for 70 percent of the total number of people who brought pets into the store that day. At the bottom of the list are beagles and other breeds I don't know well, each at 5%. In addition to those who brought their dogs into the mall, there were a number of other types of people entering and exiting the mall including those going with a family, couples, single shoppers and friends shopping together; of these, families shopping together accounted for about 45% of the total, while other types of people including friends, couples accounted for about 25% of the total, and the number of single shoppers accounted for about 20% of the total.
