Synthetic Affection imagines a near-future in which AI Babies are granted legal rights and centres on an AI Baby Protection System. By staging this institutional fiction, the project critiques current failures in parenting and prompts audiences to reflect on how families and society overlook gaps in responsibility.
The project builds a three-part, workflow-based AI Baby Protection System: (1) a AI Baby customisation website requiring guardians to read and sign the AI Baby Protection Act before creation; (2) an AR pocket handbook that turns protection duties into everyday actions; and (3) AI Baby Court posters that show an accessible path to redress when harm occurs and encourage AI Babies to assert their rights.
These constructs are not solutions but critical reflections, exposing entrenched responsibility gaps in contemporary families and society.
